KIA P2M Posts Favorite Monitoring EV Energy Consumption Simulated screen shown Saving electric energy is important for EV customers! EV energy consumption impacts the EV battery and the vehicle’s overall electric range*. Kia EVs are equipped to track vehicle energy consumption by system and it’s essential that customers know how to monitor it. To quickly assess vehicle energy consumption, customers can find “Average Energy Consumption” displayed at the bottom of their instrument cluster. This number is calculated by the total driving distance and the high-voltage battery consumption during their last driving period. It is displayed as the average miles driven per 1-kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy used. Customers can find a more detailed breakdown of energy consumption by category and percentage on the infotainment screen by selecting EV > Vehicle Battery Percentage > Electricity Use. Let’s review the different categories of consumption on the Electricity Use screen and how to reduce energy expenditure for each. Reducing Energy Consumption Battery Care: Energy expended to operate battery conditioning, to either warm the battery in cold conditions or cool the battery in hot conditions, while not plugged in.REDUCE BY:Pre-conditioning the vehicle cabin before driving (while plugged in)Storing the vehicle in a temperate locationMinimizing excursions in extreme weather conditionsNOTE: Battery conditioning can be turned off to conserve energy if not required for DC Fast Charging*.Climate: Energy used by the heating or air conditioning system (HVAC)—this can have a significant impact on range*.REDUCE BY:Pre-conditioning the vehicle cabin before driving (while plugged in)Utilizing the heated* or ventilated seats and heated steering wheel (if equipped)Only engaging the HVAC when necessaryDrivetrain: Energy consumed by the drivetrain motor.REDUCE BY:Engaging the regenerative braking* system to help recapture energy that would otherwise be lost.Maintaining a moderate driving speed, accelerating smoothly and at a steady rate.Electronics: Energy used by the vehicle’s systems, including the instrument cluster, infotainment system, overhead lighting, and more.REDUCE BY: Decreasing the use of supplemental electronics, such as lowering the audio volume or turning off interior lights when not in use.
