In the early days of electric vehicles, charging often meant navigating a confusing world of incompatible plugs and limited station access. But the EV landscape is changing fast, and it sometimes seems hard to keep up.

To support growing EV adoption and make public charging more accessible, automakers like Kia are shifting toward a unified solution: the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This means more charging options, simpler plug-ins, and access to Tesla’s vast supercharger network, which is a major convenience boost for Kia EV drivers.

Charging Overview

  • Previously, all Kia EV models were equipped with the Combined Charging System (CSS1). Starting with the 2025 EV6, certain new Kia EVs will come equipped with an NACS charging port.
  • The NACS connector offers a more compact, user-friendly design that supports all charging levels: 120V, 240V, and DC fast charging.
  • Kia models with NACS can now charge at Tesla Superchargers and other NACS-compatible stations.
  • For home and Level 2 charging, AC J1772 adapters for NACS-equipped vehicles will allow charging at standard stations.

Adapter Options

Kia offers three OEM-approved adapters to maximize flexibility:

  1. DC Adapter: NACS-equipped Kia → CCS1 DC fast chargers (e.g. Electrify America, EVgo)
  2. NACS Adapter: CCS1-equipped Kia → NACS (e.g. Tesla Superchargers)
  3. AC Adapter: NACS-equipped Kia → standard Level 1/2 chargers with J1172 charging (e.g. home charging stations)

These adapters are engineered by Kia or its affiliates, ensuring safety and compliance. Most charging networks do not allow third-party adapters, making OEM parts essential.

Owners of Kia EVs who have not received an NACS adapter can purchase the approved adapter from their local Kia dealership.

More Convenient Port Location

The 2025 EV6 (except the GT Trim) also features a relocated charge port on the driver side, making it easier to back into Tesla Supercharger stalls—no more awkward parking or taking up extra space.

Kia is redefining the EV experience by aligning with industry standards, removing charging guesswork, and empowering customers to charge wherever it’s most convenient.
