How Wireless Phone Chargers^* Work

Wireless phone chargers^* operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Inside the charging pad, there is a coil of wire in which an alternating current (AC) is passed. Inside Qi-compatible devices, there is also a coil of wire. When AC is passed through the coil in the charging pad, a magnetic field is created. This alternating magnetic field passes through the windings in the mobile device, which induces a voltage in the device’s coil. This voltage is then rectified to direct current (DC), which the device’s battery can store.

Charging Tips for Better Performance

A regular test signal is sent by the charging pad to check for a capacity or resonance change, which indicates that a Qi-compatible phone is present. Proximity to the pad is key. Thick phone cases or metallic objects between the phone and pad (e.g., coins and paper clips) may affect charger operation.
