KIA P2M Posts Favorite Understanding Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates Features may vary, simulated screen show Did you know, Over-the-Air (OTA) Updates allow a vehicle to receive software updates through the onboard embedded modem? This gives Kia the ability to update systems, and eventually offer additional Kia Connect* options for the customer on a subscription or purchase basis. The first vehicle with this technology was EV6, with a planned rollout in all 2023 models and beyond. Software Updates OTA can be used to provide customer satisfaction updates, for example, navigation* software remote updates through Kia Connect*. Other upgrades to systems may also be performed, such as AVN screens being upgraded to be more user-friendly. These are known software over-the-air (SOTA) or firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates. These customer satisfaction updates require an active Kia Connect* account for the customer to take advantage of them. The Kia Connect* application is free for one year, then requires a subscription annually based on the level of service selected. Any safety or emissions recalls that are OTA can be done without a subscription. Features on Demand (FOD) OTA will also be used for features on demand (FOD) allowing the activation or deactivation of optional vehicle features. For example, if the customer wants heated* seats, they may pay a one-time fee to purchase the option or pay a monthly fee to activate the feature. So, if a customer only wants heated* seats in cold seasons, they may purchase that option and then disable it in warmer seasons. In the case of an EV, a customer may pay to receive a higher level of charging than usual. Features have not been decided just yet, but these are possible scenarios. Also, if a feature is not available when a model is first released, OTA could be used to bring an older version up to date with the newer models. This could improve customer satisfaction, as the customer is no longer “stuck” with an out-of-date vehicle. The future is bright! OTA will be a new opportunity for customers to customize their vehicles. Customers can order features when needed such as parking assistance, improved battery performance for long journeys, or automated driving. The ability to add these features will be built into the cars at the factory from new and then activated on demand. The possibilities are nearly unlimited!
